125cm x 65cm (Framed)
‘Healing Country’ is inspired by the Goulburn River (Gaiyila) and wetlands of my country, Yorta Yorta Nation. This painting represents the renewal of ancestral lands and depicts the connection between Mother Earth and Traditional Custodians. The spirit of the river (dungula) and its flowing waters nurture country (woka) bringing food, fish (maniga) and nutrients for the nourishment of the earth. Rain generates growth of trees and bush shrubs as water (wala) spreads underground to heal and renew the landscape. The sun (dhadjowa) provides light and life for Traditional Custodians to come together around campfires (bitja); sharing culture through song, story-telling and traditional cultural practices.
Engaging with culture on country reinforces our relationship with Mother Earth and strengthens our identity and bloodlines to the Original Ancestors of the Yorta Yorta Nation. When country provides for Traditional Custodians, Traditional Custodians provide for their community. This is the everlasting cycle of our culture; to preserve and protect what ‘Always Was Always Will Be’ Aboriginal Land (Yenbena Woka).
